How to answer "My self-summary" on OkCupid
This is the first thing anyone reads on your OkCupid profile, and the section most people rewrite the most times. Strong answers describe a life rather than list adjectives: what you actually do with a week, one detail nobody else would write, and something the reader can picture. The most common failure is opening by apologising for being bad at writing about yourself.

Three "My self-summary" answers that work
Engineer who moved here for a job and stayed for the food. Most weekends I am trying to find a better dosa than the one near my old flat. Still losing.
Why it works: Gives the job in four words then spends the rest on something real. The dosa hunt is specific, ongoing, and low-stakes enough to reply to — and "still losing" adds voice without asking for sympathy.
I read too much, cook about four dishes very well, and I am the person my friends call when their laptop dies. Currently trying to become someone who enjoys mornings.
Why it works: Three concrete facts and one honest work-in-progress. "About four dishes very well" is better than "I love cooking" because the limit is the interesting part, and the morning line leaves an obvious opener.
Teacher, so my calendar is not my own until June. Outside that: long walks with no destination, one very opinionated cat, and an ongoing argument with my brother about whether cricket counts as a sport.
Why it works: The constraint is stated up front, honestly, then the rest shows a full life around it. The brother argument is the hook — it invites the reader to take a side.
Three that fall flat
I am honestly terrible at writing about myself, so I will keep this short. Just ask me anything!
Why it falls flat: Spends the most-read section of the profile apologising, then hands the work back to the reader. "Ask me anything" gives nothing to ask about, so the reader moves on rather than inventing a question.
Easy-going, ambitious, loyal, sarcastic, adventurous. Love good food, good music and good company.
Why it falls flat: Five adjectives with no evidence behind any of them, then three things nobody dislikes. The reader learns the answerer wants to seem well-rounded but learns nothing they could not guess about anyone.
Senior analyst at a Fortune 500, MBA from a top-tier programme, currently working towards a leadership role in the next two years.
Why it falls flat: Reads as a CV rather than a person. Nothing here describes an evening, a habit, or a weekend, so there is no picture of what being around this person would actually be like.
Lead with what your weeks actually contain, not with adjectives. One job clause is plenty; spend the rest on the specific thing only you would write, because that is the part the reader replies to. Two or three sentences is enough here even though OkCupid allows more. The two failures that sink this section are the apology opener, which wastes the most-read line on self-deprecation, and the adjective list, which claims traits instead of showing them. If a sentence would fit on someone else profile, cut it and write the odd, true one instead.
Common questions
What should I write in my OkCupid self-summary?
Describe a real week rather than listing traits. Give your job in a clause, then spend the rest on something specific: a habit, an ongoing project, an argument you keep having. The specific detail is what people actually reply to.
How long should an OkCupid self-summary be?
Two to four sentences works best. OkCupid allows far more room than Hinge or Tinder, but length is not the goal — most successful summaries stay under about sixty words and use every one of them on something concrete.
Should I say I am bad at writing about myself?
No. It is the single most common opener on OkCupid, it spends your most-read line on an apology, and it signals nothing about you. Skip the preamble and start with the first real detail instead.
